Naranjo, Virginia – Bear Storyteller with Two Cubs (1970s)

Louis and Virginia Naranjo were the parents of noted potter Mary Trujillo.  They were known for their storyteller figures and especially Louis’s bears.  This classic storyteller is by Virginia.  It is very tight in form and painted with wild spinach (black) and red clay.  The larger bear has three cubs, each slipped with red clay.  The bear has a painted sash around its shoulders.  It is a complicated and interesting piece!  It is signed on the bottom, “Virginia Naranjo”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  Definitely a classic of their storyteller style.
